tours of big Ben are available which surprised me but....they're only available to UK residents and a local MP must be contacted in order to set up the visit. Places are also limited and there could be a 3 to 6 month or more wait

London has some great landmarks and buildings. Big Ben is one of the older and perhaps one of the most famous buildings  visitors from near and far come to see. The Houses of Parliament and Commons and House of Lords are home to political life where MP's debate, laws are passed and protests are sometimes demonstrated. The clock of big Ben celebrated its 150th Birthday in 2009 and it has aged very well. for an old timer ;-) Famous for its reliability but even more so, its 'gongs' as the New year is seen in spectacularly via a fantastic firework display on and around the London Eye (one of the newer icons) with a countdown via the large bell within the walls of big Ben being struck. The third largest free standing clock but the world's largest four facing chiming timepiece, the great bell was the largest in the British Isles but that title was handed over to St Paul's cathedral, its bell - 'Great Paul' a 17 tonne beastie cast in 1881 taking the crown from BB. A focal point for protest or historic place of interest Big Ben and the parliament buildings will continue to attract tourists
