Asian
elephants in their hundreds were spotted at various
locations across central London during the months of June
and July 2010 before being herded together safely and
without causing distress to the elephants within the
grounds behind Royal Chelsea Hospital. Here, feeling safe
and much happier than when they were separated earlier the
character of the individual elephants was clear to see and
visitors flocked to the grassy area where the elephants
congregated and could touch, stroke, play with and take
photos of the friendly eles. After a weekend of
being together the individual elephants were put up for
auction and sold to the highest bidders. They would
probably never see each other again but at least they weren't
killed for their ivory tusks as is the terrible fate of
some of the great mammals, the largest land animal on our
planet.
The plight of
the dwindling population of Asian elephants is a cause for
concern as their
natural habitat becomes smaller year on
year. Elephantfamily.org
is a charity whose aim is to halt the decline of this magnificent
creature |
